Today we planted ranunculus corms for the first time, in hopes of having beautiful spring blooms for bouquets.
We ordered 100 corms from a mail-order company.
Corms were prepped by pre-soaking in luke-warm water for approximately 4 hours.
We are pre-sprouting the corms in plug trays, which will help the final plants bloom a few weeks earlier than if they were planted straight out into the field. This will also give us a chance to better prepare our planting bed while they are sprouting, which should take 10-14 days.
We will be growing these in our cold frame to help protect the plants from cold temps, but also protect future blooms from rain. Preparation of the cold frame will include removal of the current ground cover, tilling the soil (which has been covered for around 20 (gasp!) years), and amending the soil with compost, as well as building a cedar raised bed frame around the bed to aid in planting, weeding, harvesting, etc.
Stay tuned for a progress report!
